Angela Dorothea Merkel (born 1954, née Kasner) was originally known among her political peers by the nickname “Kasi”, derived from her maiden name; and later as “The Iron Frau,” alluding to Baroness Margaret Thatcher (1925–2013), whose nickname was “The Iron Lady”; and “The Iron Chancellor”, alluding to Otto von Bismark (1815–1898), first Chancellor of the German Empire (1871–1890). Still later in her tenure Merkel acquired the far more affectionate nickname of “Mutti”, a German familiar form of “mother” which, according to Der Spiegel newspaper, refers to an idealised mother figure from the 1950s and 1960s.
