British chivalric orders

Many of the people referred to in HoH have been awarded British orders of chivalry and other honours, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the Civil Service; and we have tried to note these where appropriate. The five classes of appointment to the Order are, in descending order of precedence:

  1. GBE Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
  2. KBE (or DBE) – Knight Commander or Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
  3. CBE Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
  4. OBE Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
  5. MBE Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Other British orders

  • CHOrder of the Companions of Honour, an order of the Commonwealth realms
  • KG (or LG) – Knight Companion or Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
