Lincoln in 1863

Located in the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C., and designed by Daniel Chester French and carved by the Piccirilli Brothers*, the enormous Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) statue weighs 170 tonnes, is composed of 28 blocks of white Georgia marble, and rises 9.1 m (30 feet) from the floor, including the 5.8 m (19-foot) seated figure (including armchair and footrest) upon an 3.4 m (11-foot) high pedestal.

The arms of the circular, ceremonial chair bear fasces** [which sometimes includes an axe], a classical Roman symbol of authority borrowed from Etruscan civilisation (c.700 BC–late 4th century BC) – not fascism, which first appeared in the mid-20th century under Benito Mussolini’s (1883–1945) Partito Nazionale Fascista (PNF) [National Fascist Party] which infamously appropriated the fasces as its logo.

*Attilio (1866–1945), Getulio (1874–1956), Ferruccio (1864–date of death unknown), Furio (1868–1949), Masaniello (1870–1951) and Orazio [Horatio] (1872–1954)
**from the Latin fascis, meaning “bundle” – the symbol representing strength through unity; a single rod is easily broken, while the bundle is very difficult to break
