Since the film’s release and critical and financial success, the character of Hannibal Lecter, a charismatic forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer – most frequently associated in film with Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins CBE* – has become a media franchise including the Harris’ novels Red Dragon (G.P. Putnams, Dell Publishing, 1981), The Silence of the Lambs (Dell Publishing, 1988), Hannibal (Dell Publishing, 1999) and Hannibal Rising (Dell Publishing, 2006); in film Michael Mann’s Manhunter** (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, 1986), The Silence of the Lambs, Ridley Scott’s Hannibal (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Universal Pictures, 2001), Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon (Universal Pictures, 2002) and Peter Webber’s Hannibal Rising† (Momentum Pictures/The Weinstein Company/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 2007); and a television series Hannibal (Sony Pictures Television/NBC, 2013–15).
